Excellent account
I was the sailor (Safety Equipment) who accompanied the Medical Officer on the trip across in the life raft another sailor called "odd job" was with us in the raft.
When the Tug started its first attempt to drag the Sub off the reef our Captain realised we were in a dangerous position relative to the tow cable. The ship "took off" with the raft and the dive boat still moored and attached to the bosuns derrick. The dive boat capsized and the divers disappeared under water and being very close to the ships propellers I had some fear for their safety (they surrvived) odd job and I were bounced around in the raft until I was able to cut us free from the ship.
A very interesting day...

In reply to <a href="https://www.navalofficer.com.au/tiru-vendetta/#comment-66">Mike Koon</a>.

Hi Mike, I was a subbie in 1971 and had the big E was my boss at Navy Office. We were exercise staff on PX-44 (Sea Hawk), Eric was COS, Tony Synnot was exercise director and I was Staff Secretary.

I remember seeing a pic of a US Sub stuck on the reef off Qld around mid 60's. Was this the Tiru ?
Best for the future.

This is a wonderful accounting of what took place on the HMAS Vendetta during the grounding of the USS Tiru.
I was the starboard lookout at the time of grounding, and also gave my testimony at the Captain's court marshal.

Not knowing if there is any interest in this information any longer, e-mail me, and I would be glad to get involved.
